Pressestimmen
"Vivid, ridiculously entertaining, and, at times, explosively funny... Cleese is a master of crisp comic prose: his elegant syntax and sudden absurdities would have PG Wodehouse raising a martini glass. So, Anyway... glows with fairness, kindness, gentleness and loyalty." (Nicholas Barber Sunday Express)"Told with considerable charm and a refreshing amount of candour, the story is one of a vulnerable soul gradually finding a degree of security from behind a carapace of cutting wit... Remarkably warm and generous." (Graham McCann Times Literary Supplement)"John Cleese’s memoir is just about everything one would expect of its author – smart, thoughtful, provocative and above all funny… A picture, if you will, of the artist as a young man." (Washington Post)"So, Anyway… breaks away from the shallow conventions of the famous person's autobiography... The result is a book that is frequently hilarious, occasionally lyrical and always thoughtful. It is a fine and funny achievement." (Herald)"Like having a long lunch with an amiable, slightly loony uncle. Who also happens to be John Cleese." (Michael Ian Black New York Times)
Klappentext
Candid and brilliantly funny, this is the story of how a tall, shy youth from Weston-super-Mare went on to become a self-confessed legend. En route, John Cleese describes his nerve-racking first public appearance, at St Peter's Preparatory School at the age of eight and five-sixths; his endlessly peripatetic home life with parents who seemed incapable of staying in any house for longer than six months; his first experiences in the world of work as a teacher who knew nothing about the subjects he was expected to teach; his hamster-owning days at Cambridge; and his first encounter with the man who would be his writing partner for over two decades, Graham Chapman. And so on to his dizzying ascent via scriptwriting for Peter Sellers, David Frost, Marty Feldman and others to the heights of Monty Python. Punctuated from time to time with John Cleese's thoughts on topics as diverse as the nature of comedy, the relative merits of cricket and waterskiing, and the importance of knowing the dates of all the kings and queens of England, this is a masterly performance by a former schoolmaster.

The story of John Cleese, his colleagues of Monty Python and other great comedians like Peter Sellers and Marty Feldman, very hilarious indeed
Ganz phantastisch. John Cleese in Hochform über 12 CDs und man wird aus dem Schmunzeln nicht herauskommen. Wunderbare Formulierungen und einzigartig vorgetragen.
Hilariously funny, I just hope he continues to write his story, I Can't wait for the next part covering the Python years.
This is an autobiography without one boring sentence in it. How wonderful. I enjoyed reading this book immensely. With his dry and intelligent humour, John Cleese talks about his upbringing, with a rather absentminded mother (to put it mildly) and a loving father. Although on the surface, he seemed to have an easy life and career, there are hidden wounds and what touched me most, his unwavering love for his father. He is observant, witty and sometimes so funny, I had to pause, recover from a hysterical laughing fit and dry my tears. I do hope there will be a second book, because this ends more or less with the beginning of Monty Python.
Unfortunately it ends 1969 with the beginning of the Pythons. This is clearly a Part 1 book. The really interesting stuff is missing - while dropping clues about Wanda and Fierce Creatures several times.
The surprising thing about this autobiography is what an incredibly easy life John Cleese had up to the start of Monty Python. He was born to well-off parents, although his mother was a bit weird, his father was almost always there for him. His school days were easy and he floated serenely through his university days.Whenever it looked like he may have been heading for a small crises there was always someone there to help him out. He drifted easily into entertainment and when it looked like he may be heading for bit of a bad patch, the old-boy network was there to offer him a job in journalism or banking, even though he had absolutely no experience in either of these fields – which goes a long way to explaining how the banks have managed to repeatedly plunge the world into one financial crises after the next over the last century or so.John Cleese was never short of money, he never went hungry or had to wonder how he was going to pay the next months rent. Through luck or coincidence he just flowed from one stage of his life to the next. All this makes reading his life story very boring.Sorry John, I love watching you in films or on the box but you should stick to making us laugh. Writing about your life doesn’t do that.
The most important thing you need to know about this book is that it only covers Cleese's life until the first recording of a Monty Python show. Anything else is only hinted at, very briefly. So, I very much suspect that he is going to do the same as e. g. Stephen Fry and going to try and sell us at least another two or three more autobiography books.I am disappointed, as I thought this book was going to cover all of his life and not only the first part. Also, I found this book very dull, as it largely focuses in minute detail on very banal and trivial things. Most things he writes are very superficial. Often, when he could get more deep and personal, he quickly switches to the next topic. This would not be a large issue, if there was more information about his actual work. But as most is about his personal relationships to the people around him, this just will not do. I mean, a lot about moving around in a small part of England during his childhood. Minute details of schools and university. Minute details of obscure shows he did prior to Monty Python. A big gap in time (decades!). Then, the final chapter about the Monty Python Reunion. That's it. The book. Before reading this book, I had a rather favorable opinion of John Cleese, based on some of his better work (Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, A Fish Called Wanda). Now, I just find it difficult to respect him any more. This book is just sad. Almost as sad as that he openly says he only does his recent tour to get the money for the divorce settlement. He thinks he is being funny. He is not.Not anymore. This is just sad.
